In this blog entry, I'm going to review the New Veloster Turbo. The Veloster Turbo was launched in Malaysia back in April 2015. It comes in 2 variants. It's priced OTR as below:
Above: My favourite color, Sunflower yellow.
1) Turbo: RM148,118.55 without Insurance (below)
2) Turbo Sport: RM151,745.87 without insurance (above)
For Malaysian market, we get the UK-spec 186ps@5500rpm and 265Nm of torque at 1500-4500rpm mated with 7 speed DCT Dual Clutch gearbox.
Colour Choices: Storm Trooper (white), Young Gun (matte color), Phantom Black, Sunflower and Veloster red. The latter 2 not available for Veloster Turbo Sport.
Fifth Gear review.
EXTERIOR Highlights:
There's 2 different side profiles of the Veloster. Left, 2 doors, Right side, 1 door. Photo shown, Young gun color Sport Version with Sports decals, bodykits and Orange dash inserts and orange Turbo stitchings.
The Veloster Turbo has a Bold front end with Large Hexagonal radiator grille, matte black and edged in black chrome matched with HID projectors with LED Day-running lights. At the rear, Dual-center twin-barreled mufflers tipped in chrome. This is sportiness. The twin tip centre exhanst, stylishly shaped and embedded into the rear bumper topped with Rear diffuser sets the Veloster Turbo apart from Standard Veloster.
INTERIOR HIGHLIGHTS:
The Veloster Turbo comes with Full Leather Seats ( with Turbo stitching side lining) with 2 different colours.

What's it like to drive?
A regular Veloster feels lethargic and feels flat at low revs and frantic at high revs. Standard 18" alloys and low profile 225/40R18 tyres makes uncomfortable ride at the expense of decent handling.
The turbocharged engine changes the whole car, with a keen, precise and minimal lag pull from low revs. Its torque delivery is strong and impressively linear, though once you’re past 5000rpm its delivery tails off a little and its vocals become quite unpleasant to the ears. Overall, the engine is pleasing in its power delivery but unsatisfying in soundtrack.
Ultimate acceleration isn't very special as Hyundai claim is 8.4sec to 0-100km/h – but you can cover ground very quickly in this car thanks to its strong mid-range energy and confident overtaking ability. No sporting Hyundai has felt as rapid and capable as this one.
The gear ratios suit it well and the brakes have an unusually solid, progressive action. There's a touch of steering tug if you accelerate hard out of a tight bend, a bit of dynamic spirit too easily quelled by an intrusive traction and ESP system. You can switch it off, but under really aggressive driving you might still catch glimpse of a flashing orange light. The steering itself is naturally weighted, as promised, and the action is properly precise.
Safety Highlights:
Safety wise, the Veloster Turbo comes with 6 Airbags as standard. There's a complete kit of Stability control namely Vehicle Stability Management system (VSM) + Electronic Stability Control (ESC) + Hillstart Assist Control (HAC).
In the braking department, the Veloster Turbo comes with Front Ventilated Discs and Rear Solid discs with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) + Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) + Brake Assist (BA). Lastly, the Veloster Turbo B-pillar impact management. For protection in a collision, reinforced sheet steel are used in the dash cross, side, pillars and roof structure.
Verdict: The Veloster Turbo's very likable car. Especially in Sunflower yellow (above). The addition of 3rd door makes it more practical. I'm 5 feet 9 and I'm proud to say I fit in the rear seats with decent comfort. Rating: 9/10.
If you want to buy this car, please call Hyundai Advant Speed Motors at 03-3362-3001. Location Setia Eco Park, near Setia City Mall.

Seen this before? Yup, we showed you this Hyundai Elantra Sport Edition last month, but now it has been officially announced by Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors. The Sport Edition of the Elantra facelift is priced atRM91,928 OTR without insurance, and is limited to 999 units.
What you get is a four-piece body kit (front and rear bumper extensions, side skirts), twin tail pipes, limited edition stickers (barcode design with serial numbers 001 to 999) and a 6.2-inch touch screen head unit with DVD and Bluetooth functions (add on a reverse camera for RM300). It is available in Creamy White or Phantom Black.
If the wheels appear rather small here, it’s because the Sport Edition is based on the Elantra FL 1.6, which is powered by a Gamma 1.6 litre MPI engine with 130 PS and 157 Nm, mated top a six-speed automatic gearbox. The 1.6 wears 16-inch rims wrapped with 205/55 tyres, as opposed to the 150 PS/178 Nm 1.8L car’s 17-inch wheels.

The Sport appears to be based on the entry 1.6 Elegance spec (RM85,928), as it lacks leather seats and the front fog lamps that are standard on the RM96,821 Executive and RM101,555 Premium variants. The 1.8L is priced at RM115,616. The CKD locally assembled Elantra FL range now has five variants in total with this new addition.
All else is as per the 1.6 Elegance, including dual airbags, ESC, Hillstart Assist, tilt-only steering adjustment, reflector headlamps, steering audio buttons and manual air con. WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 17 June 2015 — With a significant year-over-year improvement, Korean brands continue to widen the quality gap with other automakers, while Japanese makes collectively fall below industry average for the first time in 29 years, according to the J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) released today.
The study examines problems experienced by vehicle owners during the first 90 days of ownership. Initial quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality.
The industry experiences a 3 percent year-over-year improvement in initial quality, averaging 112 PP100 compared with 116 PP100 in 2014.
Historic Shifts in Performance by Brand Origin
Korean brands lead the industry in initial quality by the widest margin ever, averaging 90 PP100, which is an 11 PP100 improvement from 2014. For the first time in the study, European brands (113 PP100) surpass Japanese brands (114 PP100), while domestic makes (114 PP100) equal the Japanese for only a second time.
Although Japanese brands overall experience a 2 PP100 improvement from 2014, this has proven insufficient to keep pace with the industry, causing Japanese makes overall to fall below industry average for the first time in the 29-year history of the U.S. Initial Quality Study. Only four of the 10 Japanese brands included in the study post an improvement.
“This is a clear shift in the quality landscape,” said Renee Stephens, vice president of U.S. automotive quality at J.D. Power. “For so long, Japanese brands have been viewed by many as the gold standard in vehicle quality. While the Japanese automakers continue to make improvements, we’re seeing other brands, most notably Korean makes, really accelerating the rate of improvement. Leading companies are not only stepping up the pace of improvements on existing models, but are also working up front to launch vehicles with higher quality and more intuitive designs.”
Technology Continues to be a Trouble Spot for the Industry
Entertainment and connectivity systems remain the most problem-prone area for a third consecutive year, with voice recognition and Bluetooth pairing continuing to top the problem list.
The majority of models included in the study that have voice recognition systems experience 10 or more PP100 related to this feature.
The number of owners who indicate having voice recognition in their new vehicle has increased to 67 percent in 2015 from 57 percent in 2013. Based on results from the J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Tech Choice Study,SM this will continue to increase as simple wireless device and near field communication are the top two entertainment/connectivity technologies consumers indicate wanting on their next vehicle.
“Smartphones have set high consumer expectations of how well technology should work, and automakers are struggling to match that success in their new vehicles,” said Stephens. “However, we are seeing some OEMs make important improvements along the way. What’s clear is that they can’t afford to wait for the next generation of models to launch before making important updates to these systems.”
Highest-Ranked Nameplates and Models
Porsche ranks highest in initial quality for a third consecutive year, posting a score of 80 PP100. With a 20 PP100 improvement from 2014, Kia follows Porsche in the rankings at 86 PP100. This marks the first time in the history of the study that Kia has led all non-premium makes in initial quality.
Jaguar (93 PP100), Hyundai (95 PP100) and Infiniti (97 PP100) round out the top five nameplates. Infiniti is one of the most improved brands in the study, lowering its problem score by 31 PP100 from 2014.
Model awards are spread among several corporations, with many receiving multiple awards.
BMW AG’s Rosslyn, South Africa plant, which produces the BMW 3 Series, receives the Platinum Plant Quality Award for producing models with the fewest defects or malfunctions. Plant quality awards are based solely on defects and malfunctions and exclude design-related problems.
In the North America/South America region, Toyota Motor Corporation’s Cambridge North, Ontario, Canada (TMMC) plant, which produces the Toyota Corolla, receives the Gold Plant Quality Award.
Kia Motors Corporation’s Kwangju Plant 1, Korea, which produces the Kia Soul, receives the Gold Plant Quality Award in the Asia Pacific region.
The 2015 U.S. Initial Quality Study is based on responses from more than 84,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2015 model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study, now in its 29th year, is based on a 233-question battery organized into eight problem categories designed to provide manufacturers with information to facilitate the identification of problems and drive product improvement. The study was fielded between February and May 2015.
